So... TSMC has settled on a 3-year cadence between N3 and N2. TSMC is probably the most complacent leading-edge logic foundry at this point I scoffed when Samsung said 2GAE was in 2025 and I'll do it again with TSMC as they've said N2 is in H2-2025.
-
TSMC has decided to sit on its laurels, instead of, you know, accelerating node development. They've stumbled a second time.
-
They're running on a significant amount of technical debt due to N3 and this is a continuation of that. This was 5 years out when Intel announced their plans to accelerate their roadmaps, they would have had time to adapt, but no, they continued to stumble.
-
They acted tough by announcing $100B in CapEx when Intel announced their IDM 2.0, to pretend they really cared. TSMC is acting on complacence and the time will come when it's major anchor customers switch away as their technological advantage disappears beneath their feet.
-
As for Samsung Foundry, they're still complacent and incompetent. 3GAE will be a pile of flaming garbage. 3GAP will probably be a decent bit better. I don't believe they'll stop leading-edge logic anytime soon, but they're clearly being attacked on every side.

Samsung Electronics is a very disjointed company and you'd be hard pressed to understand it. I hope that their 3 years between 3GAE and 2GAE helps them get their nodes back in line, and gives them time to form proper R&D, PDK and DTCO teams.
-
I mostly hope that it will allow them to get rid of their terrible work culture, which is arguably worse than Intel's during AMD's downtime in the early 2010's.
-
How do I think the best nodes will line up? I think TSMC is going to drop behind quite a bit, and Samsung is going to stay just as it has been, a weird middle-ground. 2020: TSMC N5 2021: TSMC N5P 2022: TSMC N4 2023: TSMC N3E/Intel 3 2024: Intel 18A 2025: Intel 14A(?)

Sorry about this random thread, just really wanted to rant about TSMC N2 and their constant complacency.

Big Oof: Samsung is incompetent, not complacent. @Redfire75369/1515145977153622018
