    1. This is just some speculation on my part, but I have the feeling optical is the only way forward for PCIe 7.0 and higher... I don't see how we can get past PCIe 6.0 with just copper.

    The issue there is that it would almost certainly break backwards compatibility, as optical can't transfer power. Optical will also be weird since it requires more processing on either end.
